Water for Life

When we think about childhood, we think about a time of innocence. The time for lot of playing with other children. The time of lot of laughter. However, many children in many villages in Togo are far from this reality. They spend most of their days in search of water from polluted rivers that are miles away. Not only this water is not safe for them, but also the burden associated with its fetching is certainly not a task for a child. Indeed, at LiftTogo, part of our mission is to raise awareness about the poor state of educational opportunities and infrastructures in Africa, especially in Togo, and to provide assistance to the underserved children there. However, often times, when in the field, we find ourselves confronted with the reality that the number one need of some population is actually water before education. Please help us bring clean water to these children so they will be able to live a normal childhood. There is no life without Water!

Empowering Polougou through Education

Polougou is situated at approximately 30 km from Dapaong, the capital city of the Savanes region in the northern Togo. There is no health center, no market, and most importantly no clean water. The only way to access Polougou is by motorcycle ride of 45 mins.

Because the population of Pologou is deprived of clean drinking water, it suffers from high malnutrition. Every morning, women and children need to travel about 21 miles away carrying buckets to fetch water to drink, cook, and shower. Not only they have to walk that far, but they also have to climb mountains with full water buckets on their heads. As result, children are usually late or absent to school.

The village of Pologou is situated in a mountainous region with infertile soil and paradoxically more than 90% of the families are farmers. The farming conditions are arduous and the food production in the region is insufficient compared to the need. For the community-run elementary school created in 2007 that LiftTogo has been helping since 2009, children can only afford one meal a day, or often come to school with an empty stomach. Due to this, the school is faced with a high dropout rate and rural exodus is in high practice. For more information on how LiftTogo is empowering Polougou click here. Water and Community Garden for Polougou

LiftTogo’s Water-well and Community Garden Project in Polougou aims to bring clean water to the inhabitants of Polougou in order to reduce water related diseases and malnutrition in this remote village in Northern Togo, West Africa. Additionally, by helping the community of Polougou to start a garden, LiftTogo aspires to set forth a self-sustaining community. Currently, for the 2,000 inhabitants of Polougou, the closest access to safe drinking water is at 21 miles walking distance and adequate food supply is lacking due dire geographical conditions and unfavorable farming practices. You may visit this page for more information on Polougou’s struggle or help us achieve this goal by donating today.
